Monday - LONDON/CAMBRIDGE/YORKSHIRE
- 07.00 - THISTLE MARBLE ARCH. We meet our Tour Manager then drive to
Cambridge, described as the 'loveliest city in England' and home of one of
England's finest universities. Cambridge has a wealth of historic buildings,
and much of its charm lies in winding back streets and passages. You take a
walk among the "Backs", the Mathematical Bridge and venerable
colleges,, including magnificent Kings College, then on to York. A gentle
rural landscape of classic English countryside, ancient Anglo-Saxon settlements
and old medieval towns and villages. Exploring inside the ancient city walls,
we see the maze of narrow medieval streets (including the quaintly-named
Shambles) and the 13th century Minster, England's largest
Cathedral. There's also time to browse in York's tempting shops. (D)
| Fact: The odd formula for ascertaining when the date of Easter falls was
decided in Yorkshire. |
Tuesday - JEDBURGH/EDINBURGH
You explore the gentle Yorkshire Dales, with their many hues of green.
Moorland, lush farmland and deep, peaceful dales blend into an area of unique
contrasts and beauty. You reach the borders of Scotland, where you see Jedburgh
Abbey, and find the heather clad hills that this part of the country is famous
for. Then on to Edinburgh, the historic capital of Scotland. Our afternoon
guided tour shows us the best of the city of Edinburgh - the stately Royal
Mile, ancient St. Giles Cathedral and 18th century New Town. We visit the
castle, dominating the city from its rocky crag. Tonight, there may be the
opportunity to enjoy a grand Scottish night out, complete with haggis and the
skirl of the pipes. (May-Oct) Hotel: Royal Terrace. (B)
Wednesday - EDINBURGH /LAKE DISTRICT /LIVERPOOL Our first
stop is Gretna to attend the Anvil Ceremony in the Blacksmiths shop, and then
back into England. A scenic wonderland awaits us - the rugged mountains and
tranquil dales of the Lake District, inspiration to a host of English poets,
before arriving in Liverpool for our overnight stay. (BD)
Thursday - CHESTER/STRATFORD/LONDON
Day 4: Chester - Stratford - London - First, the ancient Roman city of Chester,
with its quaint 'black and white' shopping arcades and enclosing walls. Next, a
stop at the world-famous Wedgwood China Factory, then on to picturesque
Stratford-upon-Avon, home of William Shakespeare. We walk in the footsteps of
the bard to visit his birthplace. Another scenic drive this afternoon takes us
through the villages of the Cotswolds, with their thatched cottages, along
winding lanes, the prettiest part of the English countryside. Return to London
at around 6:30 pm depending on traffic. Extra nights in London England may be
arranged. (B)
