Guided Garden Tour at Dolgellau, North Wales
SPrivate gardens of Ty Newydd, Tyn-Twll and Caerau Uchaf Whimsical garden of Sir Clough Williams Ellis, designer of Portmeirion, at Plas Brondanw. Internationally-known gardens of The Dingle, and Powis Castle Stunningly located Bodnant Gardens

From our base in Dolgellau we can easily travel in several different directions across North Wales through stunning scenery to visit gardens both large and small, some famous and some privately owned where we might have the added advantage of meeting the garden owners. The variety of gardens we visit will show how owners and designers have coped with the challenges of a range of climate and soil types encountered, from seashore to mountainside locations, as well as changing historical styles.

We will spend the greater part of the day at Powis Castle (National Trust) just the other side of Welshpool, where there may also be opportunity to view inside the castle (built from the 1200s as a medieval fortress) if you wish (at your own additional cost – or free if you are a member of the National Trust – don’t forget to bring your membership card). With the castle high on a rocky outcrop, 26 acres of garden have been laid out below on a series of impressive terraces in the style of Italian and French formal gardens, and is the finest example in Britain of a late 17th century terraced garden.

Another internationally famous garden for the rest of our day today when we visit Bodnant (National Trust). With 80 acres, it has a beautiful setting, situated on southwest-facing sloping ground and commanding wonderful views towards Snowdonia. Begun in the late 19th century by Henry Pochin, a retired chemist and businessman, his grandson the 2nd Lord Aberconwy Henry McLaren was particularly energetic in developing the gardens, at a time when rhododendron collecting was at its height. The current collection is stunning in the spring.Map

Set on a rocky island in Mount’s Bay, it has a stunning series of terrace levels, thickly clothed with succulents. The Eden Project - it contains two giant multi-domed, plastic-clad conservatories or ‘biomes’. One has a Mediterranean climate “warm temperate” and the other a “humid tropic” environment. Outside in the hollow of the pit itself is the “third biome” – that of the Cornish climate itself – where the story continues out-of-doors. The gardens of Chugurno, a new addition to our tour. Map

A highlight is bound to be The Garden House at Buckland Monachorum, 8 acres of luxurious colour including naturalistic South African meadow. Moorlands stands high up in the moor close to Haytor Rocks, one of the best known natural features in the Dartmoor National Park. Superb walks start from the front door. Occupying 12 acres of grounds, it has sweeping views over the rolling Devon countryside and towards the coast. Moorlands is set between Widecombe in the Moor and Bovey Tracey.
