Gardens, Floral Marquees and demonstrations guarantee a lively summer's day out
for everyone. (B, D)Friday Cotswolds We travel to the idyllic Cotswolds, and glimpse many English cottage gardens. An English cottage garden's very nature suggests random, carefree beauty. The English Cottage Garden is an illustrated celebration of that quintessentially English garden: the cottage garden and its intricate mix of beauty, utility, wildness, and domestication. From its medieval beginnings as a yard for livestock and vegetables, the cottage garden became a retreat for the gentry of seventeenth-century and took on a new dimension of sophistication as well as retaining its traditional functional roots. At Moreton in Marsh, visit Bourton House garden. Bourton House is a modern, medium-sized but truly opulent garden made around a glorious old house, and maintained very crisply indeed. Originally planted in the 1960s by Lanning Roper. Most of the garden is formal, delineated by walls, banks and hedges. Shrubs and perennials are used generously, a raised pond, knot garden, small potager, topiary walk, trellis work and a croquet lawn show a great eye for colour. The shade-house contains novel shade-loving plants. (B, D) Saturday Hidcote Manor, one of England's greatest gardens, an Arts & Crafts masterpiece, was created in the 20th century by the great horticulturalist, Major Lawrence Johnston. The garden consisted of little more than two fields but over a period of 40 years Johnston transformed this into the garden that has played an influential role in the development of British garden design. Inspired by historic Italian gardens, Hidcote is a combination of formal design with seemly haphazard or informal planting. The design of the garden was influenced by the tenets of Gertrude Jekyll but it was also based on the traditional cottage garden. The bones of the garden are the hedges, a variety of yew, holly, beech and hornbeam to provide many shades of green, and these contain and connect the outdoor rooms into which the garden is divided. The hedges vary in height - some are low and act as borders for the plants while others are solid walls and too tall to see over. Many are clipped into topiary shapes such as peacocks, hens and doves. (B) Sunday - Grim's Dyke at HarrowMorning free to explore on your own. Late in the day, travel
northwest of London. The magnificent former country residence of Sir William
Gilbert is set in over 40 acres of beautiful gardens and woodlands. A
shrine for Gilbert & Sullivan enthusiasts from all over the world. Sir
William Schwenck Gilbert, the writing half of the Gilbert & Sullivan
partnership, who lived in the house from 1890 to his death in 1911. Enjoy a
Cream Tea which is like a little slice of Victorian England, combining elegance
with luxury, style with substance. Work up an appetite exploring the fabulous
grounds, including the famous boating lake and rose garden, then sit back and
indulge in a full cream tea with finger sandwiches, scones, cream, jam and ice
