Day 2 London - Hampton Court and St. James's Palace
Hampton Court Palace is a royal palace in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames in south west London; it has not been lived in by the British royal family since the 18th century. It was originally built for Cardinal Wolsey, a favorite of King Henry VIII, circa 1514; in 1529, as Wolsey fell from favor, the palace was passed to the King, who enlarged it. Along with St. James's Palace, it is one of only two surviving palaces out of the many owned by Henry VIII.

Hampton CourtPass St. James's Palace, one of London's oldest palaces. It is situated on Pall Mall in London, just north of St. James's Park. The palace was commissioned by Henry VIII, on the site of a former leper hospital dedicated to Saint James the Less. A new palace, secondary in interest to Henry's Whitehall Palace, was constructed in the red-brick Tudor style around four courtyards: its gatehouse survives on the north side, flanked by polygonal turrets. (CB)

Day 3 Hever Castle and Penshurst Place First, we set the scene at Hever Castle, Edenbridge, home to the upwardly mobile Boleyn family. Hever Castle GardensAt the petite castle at Hever, Anne Boelyn's childhood home it is easy to imagine how the picturesque stone castle, moat and magnificent gardens would have formed a perfect backdrop for the courtship between Anne and Henry. There is a permanent exhibition in the Tudor Long Gallery on the life of Anne while other features include the bedroom where Henry is believed to have slept. The house itself, a lovely small castle, is surrounded by a moat, fanciful topiary and more. Breathe in the scent of Hever’s roses, and imagine Ann Boleyn sitting on her favorite seat looking towards the moat and castle walls. Both Anne and Mary were ladies-in-waiting to Henry’s wife, Katherine of Aragon, both became her rivals: meet their gaze in rare portraits at Hever. Walk from room to room and find the treasures that tell how their relationship unfolded: from the replica of the clock Henry presented to Anne on their wedding in 1533, to the prayer book that she clasped on her way to the executioner’s block in 1536 after she had failed to produce a male royal heir.

After lunch at Hever Castle, we travel the short distance to Penshurst Place, Tonbridge. This spellbinding stately home amid Tudor gardens became the film double for Whitehall Palace, in the "Other Bolelyn Girl". Follow the movie’s royal entourage into the magnificent medieval Baron’s Hall, the big screen stage for one of Henry’s lavish banquets. Discover the real-life role of Penshurst Place in the tumultuous reign of Henry VIII, too. He beheaded its owner for treason, took the property as his hunting lodge, and sometimes stayed here while nipping off to woo Anne at Hever. After our day at two of the county’s most magical locations, enjoy dinner and overnight stay. (B)

Tour of KentDay 4 Knole and Ightham Mote We begin in magnificent style at Knole, Sevenoaks, in the footsteps of royalty, aristocrats, the literati and social glitterati of centuries. Once coveted by King Henry VIII, this former archbishop’s palace was transformed into a Renaissance mansion in the early 17th century by the noble Sackville family, who still live here today. View it from afar and it appears like a fascinating little village in a timeless deer park; explore inside and you find 13 glorious staterooms laid out much as they were in the 18th century: a world-renowned collection of royal Stuart furniture, paintings by Gainsborough, Van Dyck and Reynolds and wonderful 17th-century tapestries. (B)

After light refreshments at Knole, we make for Ightham Mote, also near Sevenoaks, for another historical interlude. Conjure up the feverish atmosphere of intrigue in the Tudor court and show how quickly allegiances changed to curry favour and win social position. At Ightham, you can get insights into the way one real-life courtier kept up with King Henry’s torrid affairs of the heart. Firstly, owner Sir Richard Clement decorated his home with Tudor Roses and pomegranates of Aragon to flatter Henry and Katherine – see their emblems in the Great Hall and New Chapel. Once royal passions had wandered, though, he equally readily officiated at Henry’s marriage to Anne. Fortunately, perhaps, he didn’t bother to give his home a makeover to celebrate the new match – by the time Sir Richard died in 1538, the king had already been through a third wife. We round off this day of tangled politics and court whispers with an overnight stay. (B)

Day 5 Dover Castle and the White Cliffs of Dover After breakfast, we journey to Dover Castle. Make your way to the Great Chamber on the first floor of the castle, historically a place of entertainment for the king or high-ranking visitors. You’ll soon discover that in reality Dover Castle played a significant part in its own right in the story of Henry and his wives. It was a frontline defense against invasion by Spain and France, who were united against the English king after he divorced (Spanish) Queen Katherine and broke with the Roman Catholic Church. And the amorous sovereign came here while on the hunt for his fourth wife in 1539. (B)

Day 6 Visit Chiddingstone Chiddingstone Chiddingstone is unique in that, apart from the church and the Castle, the entire village is owned by the National Trust. It is described as being " the most perfect surviving example of a Tudor villagein the county". The black and white buildings around the town square and the castle nearby offer a bucolic view. The village was used as a setting in the 1985 Merchant Ivory film "A Room with a View".

Enjoy lunch at a pub. The extensive menu, which includes everything from simple soup and sandwiches to elaborate full blown meals, is wonderful. (B, L)

Day 7 - Home All too soon, we are on our way to Gatwick Airport, where our tour ends. Don't forget to bring along an extra suitcase for gifts! (B)
