We also enjoy the gardens of Scotney Castle, which surround a 14th century moated medieval castle. Day 1 - DEPART FROM HOME Your vacation begins the moment you board your flight. Destination: IRELAND. Day 2 - GEORGIAN DUBLIN Dublin's fair city greets you upon arrival to the
Emerald Isle. The day is free to relax and explore Dublin's parks and Georgian
squares. Its brick row houses are famous for their glass laced doors. Afternoon
visit to a Helen Dillon's city garden. Helen Dillon is a world-renowned
plantswoman, writer, lecturer and broadcaster. With her husband Val, she has
created a garden that is considered to be one of the gems of the horticultural
world. This widely acclaimed garden is a mix of startling design and perfectly
grown plants - many of them rare and unusual. The view of the garden from the
windows of the elegant drawing room is in the lexicon of most photographed
scenes in contemporary gardening. A dominant feature in the garden is a canal
set in Irish limestone, bordered on each side by superb borders - one mainly in
red and the other in shades of dreamy blue. Behind the borders pathways lead
into garden rooms. Change is a feature of this magnificent garden. Evening free
to relax. Day 3 - DUBLIN PRIVATE
GARDEN Your tour of Dublin takes you to Trinity College to see the
illuminated "Book of Kells" and to visit a private garden.
Knockrose is situated 500 feet above sea level nestling on the shoulder
of The Scalp, a geological feature formed by the melting waters of a glacier.
Tom and Trish Farrell are the owners and custodians of this beautifully
cultivated unique garden, which is backed by an old mixed forest. Attached to a
traditional farmhouse and buildings, it has been evolving over the last seventy
years. The garden is packed with cottage garden plants, shrubs and trees
interspersed with areas of lawn, a vegetable plot and secluded seating. Late
May sees the scented deciduous azaleas in bloom and late June/early July is
heavenly perfumed by roses and philadelphus. Old granite mushrooms, stepping
stones and standing stones along with a variety of sculptures feature
throughout. The evening is free to enjoy this bustling city and friendly
people. (B) Day 4 - DUBLIN/WICKLOW- THE GARDEN OF

Day 6 - TO ENGLANDFly to England (included), for a transfer to the hotel., nestling in the heart of the Kent countryside at the foot of the North Downs. Time to relax and meet your fellow travelers at dinner. (D) Day 7 Visit Great Dixter House and Garden - The Manor of Dixter is first noted in 1220 and structural additions were made again in 1464. In 1910 the English architect Edwin Lutyens restored the house and designed the gardens. Completing the whole picture was an important aspect of Lutyen's designs, and once the residential part of the scheme had taken shape he concentrated on the layout of the gardens, cleverly incorporating the original outbuildings to knit all the elements together. This is a cottage garden on a large scale. An internal tour of Great Dixter takes in the impressive 15th century great hall, one of the largest surviving timber-framed halls in the country, the cozy low-ceilinged parlour, and the spacious first floor solar. There is a surprising and refreshing mix of decorative styles, illustrating that both old and modern can live comfortably together without creating a gaudy mish mash. (B) Day 8 Today, we visit the showplace of the
Royal Horticultural Society at
Wisley.
The RHS Bicentenary Glasshouse, a huge cathedral-like glass structure covers an
area equal in size to 10 tennis courts and rise to 12m (40ft) in height. It
will have three climatic zones, recreating tropical, moist-temperate and
dry-temperate habitats.Wisley Garden offers wooded slopes with masses of
rhododendrons and azaleas, wild daffodils and an alpine meadow - British
gardening at its best in all aspects. This is the 'Mecca' to many gardeners.
The garden delights and inspires in any season of the year. It is full of ideas
and information. There is always part of the garden at its best. The shop
offers as large a collection of books on gardening as anywhere in the world.
Here is a wonderful chance to buy gifts to take home. (B) Day 9 - You begin at Leeds Castle , built in the center of a lake described by Lord Conway as
the "loveliest in the world". Surrounded by landscaped gardens, it
became known as "Lady's Castle", because of the number of Queens of
England who occupied it. At Sissinghurst you see the most beautiful garden in
England, created by Vita Sackville-West and her husband, Harold Nicholson. Next
is the aromatic garden around a slender brick-built castle tower - Sissinghurst
is surely the best known and most copied garden in the world. (B)Day 10 - Nymans Garden We visit Nyman's Gardens, with its 30 acres of plants from all over the world. Nyman's has an extensive collection of rare trees, shrubs and plants. A 'theatrical' garden design full of variety, surprises and delight, Nymans is one of the great gardens of the Sussex Weald, internationally known for its beauty, atmosphere and collection of rare and important plants. There are wonderful views over the Sussex countryside towards the South Downs. Dinner at your hotel. (B,D) Day 11 - Visit the
Scotney Castle Garden and Estate. The
moated 14th century medieval castle and landscape of Scotney together make this
one of England's most romantic places. The view from the Bastion, just below
the formal terraces of the "new" Scotney Castle, takes in the
glorious colors of Ghent azaleas in late spring. In the autumn, golden tulip
trees and crimson liquid ambers take center stage against a back cloth of
parkland and woodland which are part of the 770 acre Scotney Estate. Brilliant
displays of azaleas, rhododendron and calico bush (Kalmia latifolia), wonderful
walks through 770 acre estate. Travel to London (B)Day 12 - THE CHELSEA FLOWER SHOWYou have a full day to explore the show.
