Life on the Farm
The phenomenon of
agritourismor agrotourism, or rural tourism, or farm stays, or guest
ranches, or farmhouse B&Bs, or whatever you choose to call the chance to
stay on a working farmhas been growing in Europe since the 1990s.
Called agrotourism gîtes in France, and Ferienwohnungen in Germany, in
Ireland, they are as simple as cottages or houses on rural property to a full
blown working farm. These rural houses typically on working
farmsprovide a great home base. They are an inexpensive yet culturally
rich alternative to hotels on your Ireland trip.
Even if you can't afford your own farmhouse in Ireland, staying on a
working farm, or agriturism, gets you up close with the rural heart of Ireland.
You dont even have to milk the cow for cheese (although sometimes being a
temporary farm hand for fun is an option). Dairy farms, barns, crop farms,
horse stables or all options for your stay. Sometimes, just renting a cottage
in a rural area where sheep wander past your window is enough to count.
Experience Irish farm life for a fraction the cost of a hotel. Our agriturism
accommodation requires a weeks stay. (You'll find such enticing options as
B&Bs on working farms for shorter stays on our Self
program). Plan your Ireland trip here:
| Quality shared family time A great
choice for a multi-generational vacation. Over 60 percent of respondents in a
recent survey say they sometimes or always travel as an extended family (with
grandparents and/or grandchildren.)
Sometimes you get four-star luxury and satellite TV, and occasionally a simple
cottage on a working farm. Most, though, are just what you'd expect: simple
comforts, solid country furnishings, and rural tranquility. Mainly, the
property owners live on-site and are farmers who derive the bulk of their
income from agriculture, but enjoy meeting guests from far flung places. Some
invite guests to dine with them, family-style, in the farmhouse. Each farm is
different as is each family. In Ireland, you are guaranteed of a warm welcome,

Some farmers welcome the opportunity for you to offer a helping hand, and some
do not. Help to collect the eggs in the morning, follow the sheep dogs as they
round up the sheep, or lend a hand in milking a cow - it's all part of a
farmhouse stay. Some farm homes also have horses for guests to ride.
This is an incredible and unique opportunity, to taste and feel the classic
pleasures of the countryside, through the sights, sounds, and smells of the
countryside, experience our natural heritage: the land.
