IRISH GOLD 11 days/9 nights/16 meals tour to Aran Islands, Quiet Man tour, Irish Castle stay

map

See tiny, storybook villages, where thatched roofed cottages are surrounded by postage stamp pastures, ancient castles, and the air is scented by the flavor of peat fires. Nearly every bend in the road affords gorgeous vistas of sky, land and water. Some Gaelic words are incorporated in place names all over Ireland. Some examples - bally (town), kil (church), dun (fort), knock (hill), slieve (mountain), carrick (rock), and ath (ford).

Shannon to Dublin tour Day 1 - Fri: Depart U.S. for Dublin Take an overnight flight across the Atlantic.

Day 2 - Sat: Dublin Arrival & Highlights Arrive in Dublin Airport and transfer to your hotel. Dublins Georgian brick row houses are famous for their glass laced doors. In the afternoon discover the delights of central Dublin, visiting the magnificent State Apartments in Dublin Castle. Enjoy a welcome drink with your guide and fellow travelers.

Day 3 – Sun: Boyne Valley & Abbey Tavern In the Boyne Valley, you find some of the most venerated prehistoric sites and monuments. This is the region where the Protestant King William of Orange defeated the Catholic King James II in 1690. The famous Battle of the Boyne has changed the course of Irish history. Visit the Boyne Valley Visitor Centre to learn about the burial tombs of Newgrange and Knowth, both of which are over 5,000 years old and visit one of the tombs. Return to Dublin for a free afternoon and in the evening dine at the Abbey Tavern and enjoy the lively show. (B, D)

Day 4 – Mon: Clonmacnoise & Galway Visit the monastic settlement of Clonmacnoise to see highly decorated high crosses, round towers and ruins of many churches. Drive to Galway and see the main sights before checking into your city-center hotel. Enjoy some free time to browse on your own. (B, D)

Day 5 – Tue: Aran Islands & Dun Aengus Take a short ferry ride to Inis Mor, the largest of the three Aran Islands. Visit Dun Aengus, a huge pre-historic fortress perched on cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Visit the Aran Heritage Centre to learn about local customs before returning to Galway. (B, D)

Day 6 – Wed: Quiet Man Tour & Connemara Crystal Drive to Cong, location for the 1952 movie “The Quiet Man” for a short walking tour. Travel through the scenic region of Connemara to see the gentle hills and shimmering lakes and visit the Connemara Celtic Crystal Factory. (B, D)

8 Day tour of IrelandDay 7 – Thu: Cliffs of Moher & Killarney Drive south to view the Cliffs of Moher for wonderful views of walls of rock. Take a ferry across the River Shannon to County Kerry and on to your hotel in Killarney. Settle in for a 3-night stay and maybe use the wonderful leisure facilities before dinner. (B, D)

Day 8 – Fri: Jaunting Car Ride & Muckross House Take a traditional horse-drawn jaunting car ride to Muckross House for a tour of the delightful 19th century furnished mansion. Take a walk around the charming gardens. Drive to Kenmare and through Moll’s Gap for mountain and lake views. This evening you are free for dinner. (B)

Day 9 – Sat: Dingle Peninsula Tour Today discover the glorious Dingle Peninsula. The Dingle Peninsula is one of the natural wonders of Ireland. The dramatic mountains sweep down to golden beaches and stark rocks. Fertile farms, rounded haystacks and seldom trod roads line your route. The greens of the hills contrast with the wildness of the scenes to make Dingle an enchanted place. Dingle is a native Gaelic speaking area and the lilt of this ancient tongue adds an element of mystery to this hauntingly beautiful place. Villages with names like Inch and Annascul line your route. Here is the land of "Ryan's Daughter". It is the finest of Irish imagery come true. Stop in Dingle and tour the Blasket Centre in Dunquin before returning to Killarney. (B, D)

{short description of image}Day 10 – Sun: Rock of Cashel & Dunboyne Castle Hotel
Head north to visit the Rock of Cashel, a stately limestone outcrop topped with medieval ruins. Cashel is one of Ireland's most historic sites. Cashel was the seat of the kings of Munster from AD 370 until 1101, when it was granted to the church. It has very early associations with St. Patrick. The magnificent group of ecclesiastical ruins which crown the Rock includes Cormac's Chapel, an outstanding specimen of Romanesque architecture. Travel through Kilkenny to your delightful hotel in Dunboyne. Kilkenny dates from the sixth century, when St. Canice founded a monastic settlement and church here. Little remains of them except for the round tower at the present day Cathedral. What makes the town important today is that it is the finest example of a medieval town in Ireland. Arrive in time to enjoy some of the facilities and enjoy a farewell dinner. (B, D)

Day 11 – Mon: Dublin Departure This morning take a group transfer from Dunboyne to Dublin Airport where your tour concludes at 10:00 am. There is time for duty free shopping before boarding your return flight to the U.S.A., arriving the same afternoon. No doubt along the way you've met a colorful group of eccentric Irish characters, who will be long-remembered after you return home. (B)
Postage stamps were first introduced in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland in May 1840 as part of the postal reforms promoted by Rowland Hill. With its introduction the postage fee was now to be paid by the sender and not the recipient as heretofore, though sending mail prepaid was not a requirement.
