Clare The Castle is located in a truly picturesque setting, surrounded by the tranquil landscapes and rolling hills of Clare. Beautiful Victorian and Walled Gardens surround the Castle where one can relax or enjoy a peaceful stroll. History: The Castle was built in 1467 by Sean MacNamara, and is a magnificent example of a medieval tower house. It has a long and varied history ~ from a battle field to a dwelling place. In 1571 the Castle became the seat of the MacNamara Clan ~ Earls of West Clancullen. Donagh MacNamara was a leader of the 1641 rebellion and then Knappogue remained in MacNamara hands until 1659 when it was confiscated by Cromwells parliament and granted to a Roundhead, Arthur Smith. However after the monarchy was restored in 1670 and Knappogue was returned to its MacNamara owners. The MacNamara Clan sold the castle to the Scotts in 1800 and they carried out major restoration and extension work. In 1855, it was acquired by Lord Dunboyne who continued the restoration work. The castles history is imaginatively told on colourful panels throughout its rooms. In the 1920's it passed into the hands of a local farmer and fell into disrepair. Luckily, it was purchased in 1966 by the Hon. Mark Edwin Andrews of Houston Texas. He and his wife (a prominent American architect), carried out an extensive and sensitive restoration returning the Castle to its former 15th Century glory while encompassing and retaining later additions which are a testament to the continuous occupation of the Castle. The Andrews were the last occupants of the Castle. The castle was purchased 1996 with the intention of preserving this important building for future generations. Walled Garden: The tall and imposing walls of the walled garden, have now been refurnished with climbing roses, grapevines and many clematis varieties. The garden's centrepiece - Bacchus, the Greek God of Wine, reflects the former epicurean philosophy & lifestyle of the mediaeval castle. The gardens main features include the pergola, the tranquil bandstand, the rockery with fernery, shrubberies and pathways lined with herbaceous borders. The garden supplies the Castle with fresh herbs for daily use in the preparation of the mediaeval banquet. In the magical setting of the Castle, this is a romantic oasis to sit and picnic or just escape the madding crowd. This young garden offers horticultural therapy, a healing environment for all, and provides a tranquil haven with something of interest for everyone. The castle also contains the State Room Apartment which is available for rental. The Andrews spent a great deal of money restoring this private apartment in the Castle, which was their private residence. This apartment which accommodates ten people, is furnished to the highest standards. The Apartment features 2 twin en suite bedrooms, 1 twin bedroom, 2 double en suite bedrooms and sleeps 10 people. From $1000 USD per night. More about the State Apartments: You will be in good company here, as in recent decades two presidents of Ireland and other heads of state, including Charles de Gaulle and Ronald Reagan, have enjoyed the sumptuous guest accommodation. It is beautifully appointed, with antique furniture and paintings and overlooks the formal garden. In the apartment's hallway where there is an ornate gold-leaf reception table and a mirror. Surrounded by an acre of private garden with stunning views of the Kenmare Bay the cottages make for an idyllic retreat for one or four couples that wish to explore and enjoy the south West of Ireland. Even though it is only a five-minute walk to the hotel reception, the cottages are completely hidden away from the hotel, with security gates to a private avenue that winds its way down to the cottages at the waters edge. Garden Cottage has the same spacious bedroom configuration (2 Double Bedrooms) as Little Hay with entrance hallway to a cozy lounge with kitchenette from where occupants can enjoy a most stunning view onto the Kenmare Bay. Nevertheless you know you are approaching something quite special as you descend towards its entrance, firstly you are drawn to the sound of what appears to be a mini waterfall but is a simple design feature, but an effective one, as water flows down over what remains of a high mass of rock that was excavated in order to build Garden Cottage, secondly you cannot but appreciate the skilled craftsmanship of the stone masons and the thatchers that give this cottage its unique design and appeal.
