Borthwick Castle

Only twelve miles from Edinburgh in a pastoral valley, this romantic castle stands on the summit of a knoll on the periphery of the romantic Borders immortalized by Sir Walter Scott. Borthwick Castle built in 1430 was once the refuge of Mary Queen of Scots and the Earl of Bothwell. All the bedchambers, tastefully furnished in period style. Guests will wonder at the miracle of the stone mason's art embodied in the spiral staircases, the fourteen foot thickness of the walls and the magnificent twin towers which stand 100 feet high from the dungeons to the battlements.

Dalhousie Castle

The castle has 29 stylishly appointed standard castle rooms, all with private bathrooms. All Castle rooms are non-smoking. Aqueous at Dalhousie offers an excellent range of Spa treatments.

Robert the Bruce William de Ramsay, who swore fealty to King Edward for his lands of Dalhousie, in 1926, later joined King Robert the Bruce, who went onto a glorious victory over the English at Bannockburn in 1314. A very large high ceiling room, facing south across dramatic views of the rolling parkland and forests. The rich, luxurious, Renaldie decor fully justifies the noble place this King represents in Scottish history. A dramatically canopied King Size bed dominates the room, with striking tones of blue and burgundy, whilst the furnishings relate back to medieval times. The bathroom also reflects this period with its specially designed tiles and antique style fittings.

Sir William Wallace This grand room, with doors leading out onto the Castle battlements, offers a unique panorama across open fields, forests and the River South Esk, towards the distant Lammermuir Hills. Incorporating natural Castle stone with Wallace Tartan and Gothic style fittings, the large bed can be made up as a twin or double. The heraldic theme of the bedroom itself is complemented by a windowed bathroom with Wallace crest tiles and oak paneling.

India - James, first and only Marquise of Dalhousie, became the youngest ever Governor General of India at the age of 33. The India room celebrates his magnificent contribution in the development of the Indian Empire. A large L-shaped room overlooking the River South Esk and facing south across open parkland and forests. Refurbished in a dramatic and distinct Indian style, this room has a canopied raffia double bed and furniture. The bathroom has a distinct Indian flavor in its decor along with today's modern bathroom facilities.
